St. Joseph and Real Estate: The Tradition of Burying a Statue When Selling a Home
If you’ve been around real estate long enough, you’ve probably heard someone mention burying a statue of St. Joseph in the yard to help sell a home.
Sometimes it’s said with a wink. Sometimes with genuine curiosity. Every now and then a client will ask, “Does this actually work?”
Whether you see it as a faith tradition, a bit of folklore, or simply a charming ritual, the story behind it is surprisingly interesting.
Who Was St. Joseph?
In Christian tradition, St. Joseph is the husband of Mary and the earthly father of Jesus. Scripture describes him as a tekton, a craftsman or builder, often translated as carpenter.
Because of his role as a provider and protector of the Holy Family, St. Joseph became associated with:
homes and family life
builders and craftsmen
workers and providers
In 1870, Pope Pius IX formally declared St. Joseph the Patron of the Universal Church, and devotion to him has long included asking for help with everyday needs, including housing.
Over time, that connection made him the saint many people turn to when buying, selling, or finding a home.
Where the “Bury the Statue” Tradition Came From
The tradition likely traces back to 16th-century European religious communities, where nuns reportedly buried medals or statues of St. Joseph while praying for help acquiring land for a convent.
When the property transactions came through, the practice gained a reputation for success.
Eventually the custom evolved into the modern real estate ritual:
A small statue of St. Joseph is buried in the yard of a home that’s for sale.
The homeowner prays for St. Joseph’s intercession.
Once the home sells, the statue is dug up and placed in the new home in gratitude.
You can even find St. Joseph statues specifically packaged for this tradition at Catholic bookstores and gift shops. Here in Central Ohio, many people pick them up at Generations Catholic Gifts.
Does the Catholic Church Approve?
The Catholic Church encourages prayer to saints for their intercession, including St. Joseph. Asking for help with something as practical as housing fits well within Catholic devotion.
Where the Church draws the line is superstition.
The idea is not that a statue has magical power or guarantees a sale. Instead, the tradition is meant to be a symbolic act of prayer and trust.
Many priests actually suggest a slightly different approach. Simply place the statue inside the home and pray, keeping the focus on faith rather than ritual.
The St. Joseph Home-Selling Prayer
For those who choose to include this tradition in their home sale, this is the prayer most commonly used:
Prayer to St. Joseph for the Sale of a Home
O Blessed St. Joseph,
gentle guardian of the Holy Family,
whose protection is so great and whose care is so strong,
I ask for your assistance in the sale of my home.Guide those who may wish to purchase it,
and help them see the value and beauty within these walls.May this home quickly find a new owner
who will cherish it and create happy memories here.Through your intercession, may this process unfold smoothly
and according to God’s will.I thank you for your kindness and protection,
and I promise to honor you in gratitude.Amen.
A Little Faith, and a Good Strategy
Of course, in real estate we also believe in the practical side of things:
thoughtful pricing
strong marketing
beautiful presentation
strategic negotiation
Traditions like this remind us that homes are more than just transactions. They hold memories, families, and chapters of life.
And whether you bury the statue, place it on a shelf, or simply smile at the tradition, St. Joseph has become one of the most enduring and endearing figures connected to the idea of finding the right home for the right people.
