Seven years after making the bold decision to buy her first home, a Central Ohio homeowner sold with a strong return on her investment.
Seven years, one first home, and a very personal sale

Buying your first home is a big deal at any age, and my niece took that step seven years ago as a young single woman.
It was a bold move. She worked hard, saved carefully, made sacrifices, and chose to put that effort into something she believed in. For seven years, her house gave her a place of her own and became an investment in her future.
Then, life changed, as it tends to do, and she started thinking about what should come next.
She called me to discuss her options. There was another layer to this discussion, too, because we’re family. In the early stages, she wasn’t ready to share her plans with everyone yet. We know and love many of the same inquisitive people, and part of the trust she placed in me was knowing I would protect her privacy. We agreed that this news was hers to share, when and with whom she chose.
With that understood, we tackled one of her first questions: whether she should keep the house as a rental. On paper, it made sense. The property could absolutely work as an investment for the right owner. But becoming a landlord is about more than whether a property can generate rent. So we ran the numbers carefully and talked honestly about what owning and managing a rental would look like in her life right now.
She decided selling made more sense.
From there came the less glamorous part: packing, sorting, repairing, cleaning, and getting the house ready for market. We talked through which improvements were worth making and which ones weren’t, and the Kenney & Co team connected her with trusted contractors who could help get the work done.
The process wasn’t perfectly smooth. It rarely is!
The plan was in place, but let’s just say that real life did not get the memo and threw a few curveballs our way. At times, the process was overwhelming, and we needed some time to regroup. There were market changes, major weather events, delays, and other challenges to navigate. My job was to keep the process moving, sometimes with a little nudge, but always at a pace she was comfortable with.
Almost a year after our first conversation, the sale finally closed last week.
I am so proud of my niece! Seven years after making that bold first home purchase, she walked away with a strong return on her investment and proof that all of her hard work, saving, and sacrifice had built something real: a strong financial springboard for whatever comes next.
Now that the dust has settled, I’ll admit, I may miss some of those house-related phone calls and check-ins. But I’m pretty happy to retire my Realtor-aunt hat for a while and go back to just being Aunt Liz. I’m looking forward to hearing more about time on the water, road trips, adventures with the dogs, and whatever she decides comes next.
And that really is the point. Selling your first home isn’t just about closing one chapter. It’s about figuring out what you want the next one to look like.
